Radius Forming Tooling
Large Radius Bending Needs the Right Tooling
Many customers face the same problem when producing large radius sheet metal parts: the bend should be smooth and clean, but the finished part shows marks, uneven curves, or unstable forming results.
Sometimes the material does not crack, but the surface is still not acceptable. Sometimes the curve looks different from one part to another. For panels, covers, cabinets, enclosures, and decorative sheet metal parts, this can quickly create rework and delay production.
In many cases, the problem is not only the press brake machine. The real issue is whether the radius forming tooling is suitable for the material, radius size, bending length, and surface requirement.

What Is Radius Forming?
Radius forming is used when sheet metal parts need a smooth curved bend instead of a sharp angle. Compared with normal V bending, large radius bending requires better control of material flow, contact pressure, and forming support.
If standard press brake tooling is used for a large radius part, the material may be pressed too hard in a small area. This can cause visible marks, poor curve consistency, or shape deformation.
That is why custom radius forming tooling is often needed for parts with larger bending radii.
Why Large Radius Tooling Matters
Large radius tooling helps spread the forming pressure more evenly across the sheet metal. This is important for parts that require a clean surface, smooth curve, and stable repeatability.
With the right tooling design, customers can reduce surface marks, improve radius consistency, and make the finished part closer to the drawing.
For stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized sheet, and coated sheet metal, proper tooling selection is even more important because the surface is easier to damage during bending.
When to Use Custom Urethane Tooling
For some large radius bending jobs, custom urethane tooling can be a good solution. Urethane tooling for radius bending helps protect the workpiece surface while supporting the material during forming.
It is especially useful when customers need to reduce press marks, protect coated surfaces, or form smooth curves on visible sheet metal parts.
However, not every radius forming job needs urethane tooling. The final solution depends on material thickness, required radius, part length, bending angle, and production quantity.
Shengpu Tooling Solution
Shengpu Tooling manufactures custom press brake tooling for radius forming, large radius tooling, custom bending dies, and special sheet metal forming applications.
Before making the tooling, we can review your product drawing, material thickness, required radius, bending length, surface requirement, and press brake clamping system. Based on these details, our team can help design a practical tooling solution for your production.
If your current tooling leaves marks, creates unstable curves, or cannot meet the required radius, Shengpu Tooling can help evaluate the problem and provide a custom solution.
