Corrugated Rib Forming Without Pressing the Flat Surface
Many customers run into this problem when making long sheet metal panels: the panel needs several raised ribs for strength, but standard bending dies can only bend the edge, not form continuous corrugated ribs on the flat surface.
If the wrong tooling is used, the rib height may be uneven, the panel may be pressed out of shape, and the flat surface may be marked or distorted. For truck bodies, cabinets, enclosures, and decorative wall panels, this can quickly lead to poor appearance, weak structure, and extra rework.
That is why a press brake bridge die is needed for this type of corrugated rib forming.

What Is a Press Brake Bridge Die?
A press brake bridge die is a special type of press brake forming die used to form raised corrugated ribs on sheet metal panels.
Unlike standard press brake tools that bend a 90-degree angle, the bridge die is designed to form wave-like or U-shaped strengthening ribs. The upper and lower die have an open bridge structure in the middle, so the tooling does not press the flat surface of the sheet metal.
Instead, it only forms the raised rib area, helping the panel become stronger while keeping the main surface cleaner and more controlled.
How It Works
During forming, the sheet metal passes through the tooling step by step. With one feeding direction, the corrugated forming die can continuously form multiple U-shaped ribs across the panel.
This is useful when customers need repeated rib structures for strength, decoration, or both. A properly designed press brake die for corrugated ribs can help improve panel stiffness without changing the entire product structure.
Bridge Die vs. Standard Bending Die
A standard press brake die is mainly used for bending angles, such as 90-degree bends, flanges, and common sheet metal edges.
A bridge die is different. It is not mainly used to bend an edge. It is used to press raised corrugated ribs into the sheet metal surface.
This difference is important because customers sometimes try to use ordinary tooling for this kind of forming, but the result may be unstable rib height, surface marks, poor consistency, or panel deformation.
For corrugated rib forming, the tooling structure must provide enough clearance and support while avoiding unnecessary pressure on the flat panel area.
When Do You Need This Tooling?
You may need a custom die for U-shaped stiffening ribs when your sheet metal product requires:
Raised strengthening ribs.
Corrugated or wave-like panel structure.
Better stiffness without using thicker material.
Long decorative wall panels.
Truck body panels.
Machine cabinet panels.
Electrical enclosure covers.
Repeated U-shaped forming in one feeding process.
If the panel needs both strength and a clean appearance, a custom bridge die is usually more suitable than standard bending tooling.
Shengpu Tooling Solution
Shengpu Tooling manufactures custom press brake tooling for non-standard sheet metal forming, including press brake bridge die, corrugated forming die, upper punches, lower dies, radius dies, offset dies, hemming dies, and other special-shaped tooling.
For bridge die projects, we can design the tooling according to your drawing, material thickness, rib height, rib width, rib spacing, panel length, forming direction, and press brake clamping system.
If you are not sure whether your panel should use a bridge die or another forming solution, Shengpu Tooling can help evaluate your drawing and provide a suitable tooling proposal.
